9th Annual Putting Fore The Future

Greetings HVGA members,

Hope Initiative is one of the local charities that our golf club continually promote due to their good will. As part of their fundraising efforts, they usually host annual golf tournaments to generate funds to continue their cause. This year, their golf tournament will be hosted at Wildcat Golf Club.

To entice HVGA golfers to come out and support their cause, HI offers discounts for all HVGA teams and prizes for the HVGA team that shoots the lowest score among all HVGA teams. All HVGA members will pay $90 instead of $100/person for tourney entry fee, and the winning HVGA team will receive Bestbuy and Kin Son gift certificates.

Let’s show HI our support by forming teams and represent HVGA at their golf tournament. Our presence will show the Viet community that we can make a difference by doing what we do best: playing golf. If for no other reason, this tournament will provide a practice round to “feel” your way around this golf course since it is on our schedule for this year.

Hope to see all of you out there this Saturday,

Kiet Luong
HVGA President

After 40 Years, U.S. to Clean Up Agent Orange in Vietnam

DA NANG, Vietnam – In the tropical climate of central Vietnam, weeds and shrubs seem to grow everywhere – except here.

Forty years after the United States stopped spraying herbicides in the jungles of Southeast Asia in the hopes of denying cover to Vietcong fighters and North Vietnamese troops, an air base here is one of about two dozen former American sites that remain polluted with an especially toxic strain of dioxin, the chemical contaminant in Agent Orange that has been linked to cancers, birth defects and other diseases.

On Thursday, after years of rebuffing Vietnamese requests for assistance in a cleanup, the United States inaugurated its first major effort to address the environmental effects of the long war. Read more.

Bear Creek Little League

In addition to playing golf with you guys, I am also a volunteer coach with the Bear Creek Little League. I am a head coach for one team and an assistant coach for another. My teams are looking for businesses that would sponsor us. This is a great way to get 100% tax deduction and an avenue of advertising for your businesses. Our teams will have the names of your businesses on the back of our baseball jerseys, among other things.

In the weeks after the oil spill, Tuan Nguyen visited 15 towns around the Gulf Coast to seek out Vietnamese fishermen whose lack of English made their sudden loss of livelihood even more daunting. By some estimates, as many as one-fourth to one-third of Louisiana’s 12,400 licensed commercial fishermen immigrated from Vietnam. Read more.
